Caribbean Open Championships 2009
2009-06-22   07:13
The weekend of the 9th May 2009 saw the start of the 2nd Caribbean Open Taekwon-Do Federation Championships held in the Grenada Grand Beach Hotel and Conference Centre in Grenada, West Indies.

The event was organised by the founder of Eastern Caribbean Taekwon-do, Master Augustus Mitchell from Grenada and was supported by Master Small (representative from Barbados), and was hosted for one day only.

On the eve of this tournament Grand Master Jong Soo Park held a training session for all students to share his Taekwon-do knowledge and expertise and also give everyone a chance to ask any questions they may have.

The tournament was declared open by the Sports Minister for Grenada (Hon. Patrick Simmons), and was also attended by invited dignitaries; Grand Master Jong Soo Park from Canada and Dr/Master Andy Mencia from the USA.

Countries including UK, Ireland, Carriacou and Barbados participated. The overall competition was won by the UK, but many of the medals were awarded to the hosting nation, Grenada.

The medal presentation took place where every student that competed received a commemorative Caribbean Certificate to remind them of the day so that no one went home empty handed; a brilliant ending to a successful day.

On the Sunday after the tournament a Training session, seminar and Congress Meeting was held in the Grenada Taekwon-do Academy. A new Caribbean Executive Board was formed for the Caribbean Taekwon-do Federation. Master Mitchell and Master Small held the training session for all competitors at the academy, the first academy of its kind in the West Indies.

The tournament was well received by all competitors and clearly the beautiful environment encouraged the participants to promise their return next year, when it is hoped Barbados will be the next hosts.
