Umpire B class course in Brisbane, Australia, 19th Dec.2009
17th Feb 2010   05:07
22 Black Belts from across the State of Queensland attended the course conducted by Senior Master Lai and 6th Dan Sabum Jason Lai in Brisbane in Dec.19th 2009.

Senior Master Lai is the President of the Australian NGB and Sabum Jason Lai the Secretary. Both flew up from Melbourne to conduct the one day course. Sabum Graham Moulden flew in from Bangkok to participate in the course. “Whilst a number of QSDTA senior Instructors have completed umpire courses in the past and officiated at competitions, none have applied for official certification” Mr. Moulden said.
It is now a constitutional requirement that officials at sanctioned competitions must hold ITF certificates for the appropriate level of umpiring / judging. Black Belts who hold an Umpire B certificate can officiate at State and National competitions in their country.
“Whilst the Academy has historically not participated in competitions I believe that the new rules and stability of the AAITF provide the right environment for our students to get involved both as competitors and officials” he added.
“In addition the resources within the Academy by way of senior instructors will allow the development of competition specific classes. The instructors in each region will be 4th Dan or senior and holders of the appropriate coaching qualifications and umpire certification. The separate classes will be conducted for those students wishing to participate in competitions however it will be a requirement that they continue with traditional lessons” Mr. Moulden said.
The course commenced at 9am and concluded at 5:30pm with a short break for lunch. The participants thoroughly enjoyed the day and the very practical hands on approach of both presenters.
The next day participants spent two hours conducting mock competitions to practice and reinforce the lessons of the previous day.
The National Championships and Australian Senior team selections will be held in Brisbane late in 2010. Leading up to the Nationals and Selections will be a number of minor less serious events that will be used as try outs. Local, inter-regional and perhaps an official AAITF Queensland State Championship will provide exposure to the competitive environment.
